"A new wave of the Spirit: Second-generation African Pentecostals in the West and their contribution to Pentecostalism" Caleb Nyanni

Pentecostals are generally known for their keen emphasis on the doctrine of the baptism in the Holy Spirit and their attention to the manifestations of the works of the Holy Spirit in their lives and worship services. With events on the day of Pentecost as a springboard for the bases of their beliefs, some Pentecostals place a high premium on receiving the power that comes with the promised Holy Spirit often accompanied with speaking in tongues (Acts 1:8). Though Spirit baptism and power is a general Pentecostal tradition, African Pentecostals have certain perspectives on the Holy Spirit and the power he gives which is comprehensible only within the African worldview and understanding. This African perspective on Pentecost has shaped the pneumatology and ecclesiology of most African Pentecostals both at home and in the diaspora. Generally, first generation African Pentecostals in the diaspora have sought to maintain their world view and practices in the West. However, the rise of the second and third generation African diaspora Pentecostals have contributed to a new and emerging brand of Pentecostalism which is an amalgamation of African and western practices and beliefs. This convergence of African and western concepts is creating and shaping a new form of Pentecostalism which requires attention. This paper discusses how the beliefs and practices of the second-generation African Pentecostals in the West is contributing to the changing face of world Christianity.
