I would like to start this reflection on my own work, and in particular my book, Practical Theology, by thanking Dr Oliver McMahan for his kind invitation to be the pre-conference speaker this year. I appreciate the invitation and it is good to be in Tennessee once again. It is ten years since my last visit! What I would like to do is to give some background to the book by way of a short personal biography (if you like, it is a testimony) and then to outline what I think were the key things I attempted to achieve in the book. I shall then reflect on how my work has developed since then and finally identify some areas that I suggest require attention.
