Description

In this paper my goal is to show the interpretive usefulness of Speech Act Theory (SAT) for understanding the nature and function of Rhetorical Questions (RQs) as Indirect Speech Acts (ISAs) that express the self-involvement of the original speakers/singers as well as ongoing readers/singers. I will apply my interpretive analysis to three RQs as they occur in Exodus 15:1-18, Psalm 8, and Psalm 88.
