Description
Two hypotheses based upon the observation of shared literary expression are advanced in the area of intertextual clarification. It is argued that Luke clarifies Paul’s Spirit-reception and Spirit-gifting language and, further, also clarifies Paul’s Spirit-interiority language. This proposed Lukan transformation is supported by Luke’s probable knowledge of Paul’s letters and by Luke’s probable literary environment in the Greco-Roman progymnasmatic narrative-rhetorical tradition. On these hypotheses, Luke, at an apex of literary development, improves upon Paul with expressive instances of identical and similar vocabulary in order to communicate more clearly, concisely, and plausibly with the expected use of the finest and most effective examples and precedents.
