Description
My paper analyzes the one hundred year old chancery court case between Charles Harrison Mason founder of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) and Charles Price Jones founder of the Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. It focuses on Mason’s opponents and the motivations beneath the controversy. This moment is crucial because: 1. this case birthed COGIC, North America’s largest African American Pentecostal organization, 2. sheds light on how, Mason the son of slaves, rose from obscurity to historical prominence, and 3. illustrates how Mason and his movement earned their place in America’s religious pantheon.
