Abstract
This doctoral project creates a five-course developmentally focused online training program aiming to cultivate the necessary understanding, behaviors, and skills for intercultural fluency. Intercultural fluency is foundational for the successful navigation of intercultural interactions. Cultural differences can complicate interactions and increase the potential for tension, conflict, misunderstanding, and miscommunication. Existing siloed intercultural research results in confusing terminology, a lack of uniformity, and discipline-specific methods to organize findings. This program addresses these by first exploring the relationship between cultural competencies, global mindset, cultural dimensions, and cultural intelligence related to intercultural proficiency. Then, synthesizing and leveraging cultural research in psychology, global leadership, sociology, and professional coaching to support one’s intercultural development. The program explores the cultural intelligence framework integrated with multidisciplinary, intercultural research to create a universal exploratory framework. This expanded framework provides a robust structure for organizing all current and future cultural phenomena and research findings. The program’s comprehensive multidisciplinary definitions for significant intercultural terminology support a unified and thorough understanding of intercultural research. The program presents the intercultural fluency developmental model which offers a practical, simplified, and memorable guide to building intercultural fluency for every audience. Upon completion of all courses within this program, participants can expect to gain personal and professional benefits. These include an increased understanding and appreciation of cultural differences, improved collaboration, increased confidence, and successful intercultural interactions while minimizing potential failure.
