Description

Witnessing Jesus Christ as the Only Savior through the Power of the Holy Spirit: Asian Experiences

Julie Ma

Abstract: Key religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and pervasive Animism have shaped cultures and worldviews in Asia. In spite of the influence of western civilization in recent times and economic developments, distinctive religious beliefs are deeply rooted and practices widely practiced throughout this vast continent. Therefore, the exclusive Christian claim on Jesus Christ as the only Savior had to negotiate these religious orientations and worldviews. Christianity has often met stiff resistance and sometimes bloody persecution. The study focuses its attention on Pentecostal impact upon a tribal region of the Philippines, resulting in radical conversions and social impact. This experience is also compared to the author’s personal conversion experience to highlight typical Asian experience with Christianity.

Bio: Julie C. Ma (MA and Ph. D in Intercultural Studies, Fuller) served as a Korean missionary in the Philippines (1981-2006), and as Research Tutor of Missiology at Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, Oxford, UK. She is currently Associate Professor of Missiology and Intercultural Studies, Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK. Among her publications are When the Spirit Meets the Spirits: Pentecostal Ministry Among the Kankana-ey Tribe in the Philippines (Peter Lang, 2000), and (with Wonsuk Ma) Mission in the Spirit: Towards a Pentecostal/Charismatic Missiology (Oxford: Regnum, 2010). She served as a general council member and executive committee member of Edinburgh 2010.
